Another interesting day with 3 highlights is ahead of us. After breakfast we drive through the famous Mountain Pine Ridge and Chiccibul rainforest reserve into the legendary old Maya city of Caracol. The Caracol army has defeated Tikal in the last known Mayan battle around 800 BC. Since this fact is known, Caracol is gaining in importance. On the way back we stop at the impressive Rio Frio Cave for exploration and afterward the wash off the sweat of the day in the spectacular waterfall system Rio On Pools.

Day 4

Actun Tunichil Muknal.

Today we visit and explore the secret Maya ceremonial place Actun Tunichil Muknal. Hidden in the jungle is ATM certainly one of the main attractions, if not the very attraction in the west of Belize. We swim into the entrance of the cave system. After about 1 mile river walk and climbs over rock formations we arrive in the main hall. Centuries old handicrafts, skulls and skeletons convey impressions of old Maya ceremonial practices.

Day 5 & Day 6

Tikal Guatemala

Tikal speaks for itself. What should I add? Tikal is the only place in the world that has been declared a natural and cultural heritage. The ruins are within an area of 225 square kilometers and include 5 temples. 3 of them are accessible. We leave Belize around 7am. Crossing the border to Guatemala and reaching the Tikal national park consumes about 2.5 hours. The guided day tour takes about 3 to 4 hours. Afterward we have late lunch and check in to your hotel nearby. Do not go to sleep too late because in the early morning we go back to the mystical city to enjoy the sunrise. Sunrise in the jungle over Maya ruins with the shouting of the Howler monkeys is an unforgettable spectacle in itself. We drive back to Belize around midday.

Day 7

Lamanai

Lamanai is one of Belize’s major Mayan ceremonial centers. In addition to the exotic backdrops of the ancient Mayan in art and architecture, Lamanai (submerged crocodile) was also one of the longest populated Maya cities ever. The ancient city is not all for the day – the journey by boat over the New River is a highlight in itself!
